What It Is

How ChatGPT and Google AI Decide Which Contractors to Name

Three different products, one shared requirement: your business has to be findable, consistent, and clearly described.

A homeowner with a failed water heater or a dead furnace can run a mobile near me search and read one written answer instead of scrolling ten blue links. ChatGPT search, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode write a short answer and attach the sources behind it. If your company is not among those sources, the homeowner reads about your competitor and never sees your name.

AI search optimization is the work of making your company easy for those systems to find, read, and name. It sits on top of local search engine optimization, because Google states that standard SEO best practices still apply to its AI features. What changes is the target: instead of earning a position in a list, your pages and listings have to supply clear passages that an answer can quote.

Digital marketing for contractors used to mean three channels: Google Maps, organic rankings, and paid advertising. A fourth now sits beside them, and it rewards accurate business details, crawl access, and direct answers to the questions your customers ask before they call. Done well, it can add a new source of inbound leads and organic website traffic alongside your existing lead generation.

Three surfaces, three sets of rules
ChatGPT search

OpenAI uses OAI-SearchBot to help surface websites in ChatGPT search, and ChatGPT search can also draw on search partners. A site can be reachable and still not be chosen, and OpenAI does not publish a formula for picking local contractors.

Google AI Overviews

Google finds pages for its AI answers through its Search index and ranking systems. A page must be indexed, eligible to show a snippet, and not excluded in Search Console’s Search generative AI setting. Meeting those conditions does not guarantee a citation.

Google AI Mode

A conversational version of Google Search. Google notes that AI Overviews and AI Mode may run several related searches at once, a technique it calls query fan-out.

The Problem

Three Quiet Reasons a Good Contractor Gets Skipped

Ranking well on Google does not guarantee a mention in an AI answer. If calls are slow, jobs are going to competitors, or you rely mostly on referrals, these are the gaps we check first.

A crawler or search setting is blocking access

Two separate checks. In Google Search Console, we confirm the page is indexed, can show a snippet, and has not been excluded from Search generative AI features. For ChatGPT, we confirm robots.txt, your CDN, and firewall rules allow OAI-SearchBot. GPTBot is a different crawler tied to model training, so allowing one does not require allowing the other. Passing both makes a page eligible, not guaranteed.

Your service details conflict across listings

If your website says emergency plumbing and another listing says general construction, an answer engine has two descriptions of the same company. We align the name, phone, category, hours, and service areas. A contractor who works at customers’ homes should hide the business address on Google, so matching never means publishing a home address everywhere.

Key details sit where text cannot be read

Google asks that important content be available in text form. A service area list inside a graphic, a price sheet saved as a PDF, or a slider that hides the license number all fail that test for Google and for any other system reading the page.

Comparison

AI Search vs Local SEO vs Google Ads

Three ways to get found. They overlap, but they are bought and measured differently.

How we measure itRankings, calls, direction requestsRepeated prompt tests, cited pages, AI referral visits in Google AnalyticsClicks, calls, cost per lead

This work builds on local search engine optimization for contractors and does not replace it. Google states that the best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Contractors who run Google Ads can keep advertising while the organic and AI work compounds.

You may also see this work sold as answer engine optimization (AEO) or generative engine optimization (GEO). Google treats both as part of search engine optimization and says they need no special files or hidden code. Ask any provider what it does beyond your existing SEO and how it measures the result.

What We Do

Eight Services Behind Every Engagement

Each one improves your online visibility in a specific way: how ChatGPT or Google AI finds, reads, or trusts a contractor.

AI visibility audit

We run real homeowner questions about your trade and city through ChatGPT and Google AI Mode, record whether you are named and which pages are cited, then compare that with your Search Console and Google Analytics data to choose the first fix.

Crawler and indexability check

We read your robots.txt, CDN, and firewall settings for blocks against Googlebot and OAI-SearchBot, then check indexing, snippet eligibility, and the Search generative AI setting in Google Search Console.

Google Business Profile optimization

Categories, services, service areas, photos, posts, and accurate business details, built out through our Google Business Profile work. Home-based contractors keep their address hidden.

Business detail consistency

One approved set of company details matched across your website and relevant listings: name, phone, hours, services, and real service areas. Public addresses follow each platform’s rules for service-area businesses.

Citation building

Listings and mentions on relevant contractor directories and local sites, handled through our citation building service. We do not buy recommendations or plant forum comments.

Answer content

Service pages on your contractor website that answer a customer’s next question using details you confirm: what the visit includes, which towns you cover, and how to book. We avoid near-identical pages for every town.

Schema markup

Structured data that matches the visible page text, including LocalBusiness and Service markup where it fits.

AI mention and referral reporting

Monthly prompt tests and cited pages, Google AI impressions from Search Console’s Generative AI report, and AI referral visits in Google Analytics, shown beside calls and form fills. Google’s report counts impressions, not clicks or jobs.

By Trade

Built Around the Work Your Trade Actually Does

The questions homeowners ask differ by trade, so the pages, listings, and answers differ too.

HVAC

Separate pages for AC repair, furnace repair, installation, and maintenance plans, each tied to the cities you serve. Seasonal demand means the pages need to be indexed before the first heat wave or cold snap, not during it.

Plumbing

Emergency, water heater, drain, and sewer pages with the response area stated in plain text. We add a city page only when it carries distinct, accurate information for customers there, because repeating one page with a new town name adds nothing.

Roofing

Repair versus replacement, material choices, and storm damage pages that explain the process and the license. Storm-driven searches arrive in bursts, so the content has to exist before the storm.

Electrical

Panel upgrade, EV charger, rewiring, and inspection pages. For rural service areas we list each town and county you cover in text, since a single vague service area line gives an answer engine nothing to match.

Straight Answers

What We Can Promise and What We Cannot

Any agency that guarantees a ChatGPT mention is promising something neither OpenAI nor Google offers.

What we control
✓Whether crawlers can reach your pages
✓Whether your business details match everywhere
✓Whether your pages contain clear, quotable answers
✓Whether your Google listing is complete
✓Whether review requests follow each platform’s rules
What nobody controls

Neither Google nor OpenAI publishes a formula that guarantees a mention. Allowing OAI-SearchBot makes ChatGPT search eligible to surface your site. It does not promise placement, and Google says the same about its own AI features.

Answers can also change from one run of the same question to the next, which is why we repeat each prompt before reporting a result.

When an answer gets a detail wrong, we trace it to the cited source and correct the sources you control. Answers may take time to update.

Mentions are not leads

A mention in an answer and a booked job are different events, with website conversion and phone handling in between. We report visibility, cited pages, and AI referral visits separately from phone calls and form submissions, so you can see where the chain breaks instead of guessing.

Pew Research Center found that users clicked a traditional result in 8% of Google visits where an AI summary appeared, versus 15% without one (March 2025 browsing data). That describes general search behavior, not a measured loss of contractor leads.

About Digital Media Group

The Agency Behind the Work

Digital Media Group is a marketing agency that started in Salt Lake City, Utah in 2011, opened a second office in Yerevan, Armenia, and later moved its headquarters to Los Angeles. Since then the agency has focused on home service contractors nationwide: HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, and the trades beside them.

A team of more than twenty people in Los Angeles and Yerevan does all the work in-house. Nothing is outsourced, there are no long-term contracts, and every report shows the same numbers our team sees. AI search work is a new service line for the agency, built on the same local search engine optimization, Maps listing, and review work we have done for contractors since the start.

In-house, month-to-month, transparent

Every audit, page, and monthly report is written and checked by our own team. If the work stops helping, you can stop the service without a contract to break.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to What Contractors Ask Before Hiring for AI Search

How much does AI search optimization cost?

The cost depends on the trades and service areas covered, the condition of your website and listings, and how much content and reporting the work involves. We quote after the visibility review so the scope matches your business.

How can I check whether ChatGPT recommends my company now?

Open ChatGPT search and ask for contractors in your trade and a city you actually serve. Record whether your company appears and which sources are cited. Repeat the question at different times and compare the results. This gives you a small sample, not a complete ranking report.

Do I need schema or an llms.txt file?

No special AI meta tag, llms.txt file, or schema type is required for Google AI Overviews or AI Mode. Structured data still helps when it accurately describes the visible content, but it is not a shortcut to an AI recommendation.

Can I train ChatGPT by typing my company details into it?

No. Telling ChatGPT about your company in one conversation does not make it recommend you to other users. ChatGPT search visibility depends on information its search systems can reach and select, not on repeated chat entries.
