Google Business Profile Expansion

Multiple Google Business Profiles for Contractors

Yes, when each profile represents a real operating location. Expanding into another city without opening another legitimate branch does not qualify a contractor for another profile.

The Main Rule

Google Looks at Where the Business Operates, Not Just Where It Works

A contractor can serve customers across several cities from one shop, warehouse, or home-based operating location. Those service territories do not become additional business locations simply because crews drive there.

Google allows a separate profile when another service-business location has its own staff and service area. The profile should represent a branch that exists before the listing is created.

Expansion Decision

Use One Profile or Create a Second Profile?

Use the operating structure of the business to make the decision.

Eligibility Test

What Makes a Second Contractor Location Legitimate?

A real operating location

The branch should be a place where your company actually operates. Its address should match the physical operation being represented.

Separate staff, without an invented headcount rule

Google requires separate staff at different service-business locations. Its public guidance does not publish a minimum number of employees.

Google also does not publish a detailed formula for one manager covering two locations, employees splitting time, or part-time staffing. Contractors should not treat an unsupported staffing formula as an official Google rule.

Staffing and hours depend on the location type

A customer-facing location must be staffed and able to receive customers during its stated hours. Co-working locations have the same staffing requirement during business hours.

For a hidden service-area address, Google does not publish the same hour-by-hour on-site staffing rule. It separately requires different service-business locations to have separate staff.

Businesses operating only by appointment should not publish normal main hours. Appointment-only scheduling does not create an exception to location eligibility.

A separate service area

The second branch should serve its own territory. That operating structure is different from sending the original location’s crews farther away.

Profile Type

Storefront, Service-Area, or Hybrid: Which Setup Fits?

The profile type follows how customers actually interact with the location.

Profile TypeHow It OperatesAddress Treatment
StorefrontCustomers visit the location during stated hours.A qualifying address can be shown publicly.
Service-area businessThe company travels to customers and does not serve them at its address. The operating address is hidden.
Hybrid businessCustomers visit, and the company also travels to customers.A qualifying storefront address can display with a service area.

When does the location need signage?

Businesses that show their address on Google should maintain permanent fixed signage at that location. Co-working locations also need clear signage.

A contractor that does not serve customers at the operating address should use the service-area setup and hide the address instead of presenting it as a storefront.

Ineligible Shortcuts

A New Address on Paper Is Not a New Business Location

A virtual office does not qualify when the business does not actually operate there. Paying for the address or receiving mail there does not change that rule.

P.O. boxes and remote mailboxes are also not acceptable business locations for a profile.

Co-working offices have additional requirements

A co-working location needs clear signage, customer access during business hours, and staffing by your own business during those hours. A shared receptionist does not replace your own staff.

Service Areas

One Profile Can Cover Several Cities

Google lets a service-area business select up to 20 supported service areas, including cities and postal codes.

The overall territory generally should stay within about two hours of driving time from the business base. Google notes that larger areas can be appropriate for some businesses.

Service areas are selected by place, such as a city or ZIP code, rather than by drawing a mileage radius around the business.

Verification

Be Ready to Prove the Second Location Operates

Verification can require evidence of the location, the business operation, and your authority to manage it.

01

Location proof

Show street information, building identifiers, or other details that confirm the operating location.

02

Operating proof

Tools, equipment, vehicles, workspace materials, and business documents can support the verification.

03

Management proof

Access to business-only assets or matching records can help show that you manage the operation.

Before recording, review DMG’s Google Business Profile verification video guide for the evidence and recording workflow.

Setup Workflow

How to Set Up the Expansion

If the existing location is serving more cities

  1. Keep the existing Business Profile.
  2. Add only the service areas the operation actually covers.
  3. Support important markets with useful location and service pages on your website.

If a real second branch qualifies

  1. Search Google Maps for the business name and city first.
  2. Claim an existing unverified location instead of creating a duplicate.
  3. Create a new profile only when no existing profile represents that branch.
  4. Enter the real branch information and complete verification.
  5. Hide the address if customers are not served there.
Local SEO

Will a Second Profile Help You Rank in Another City?

A real second branch gives Google another legitimate operating location to consider for local search. Distance remains one part of local ranking.

Another profile does not guarantee a top position. Google also considers how relevant and established the business appears for the search.

The branch’s website connection should also make sense. Google says a profile should provide a phone number that connects to the individual business location or a website that represents that location.

A separate website domain is not required. One company website can support several locations when each linked page clearly represents the branch it belongs to.

DMG’s contractor website optimization guide covers the service-area and location-page structure that supports local search and lead conversion.

Reviews & Management

Keep Each Branch Operationally Distinct

Several legitimate profiles can sit under one management structure. The customer-facing information for each branch should still match that location.

Do not expect reviews from the original branch to populate a new branch automatically. Google’s review-transfer process mainly addresses situations such as relocations and duplicates.

Route review requests by branch

Google does not publish a special rule assigning multi-location service calls to one branch for review purposes.

Choose an internal rule instead. Record which branch completed the job, then send that profile’s review link after service.

Create a branch control record

Keep one internal record for each Business Profile so staff can tell the branches apart without reconstructing the details later.

  • Business Profile ID
  • Operating address and public-address status
  • Staff assignment and service area
  • Customer-facing hours, when applicable
  • Phone number and linked location page
  • Review-request link
  • Verification and operating documents
Compliance Risk

What Happens if Google Rejects the Second Location?

The number of profiles is not the issue. The risk begins when another listing does not represent an eligible location.

A profile Google identifies as a duplicate may stop appearing on Search and Maps. Profiles that do not follow the guidelines can also be suspended or disabled.

Account-level restrictions can create a larger problem because profiles managed by the restricted account can also be suspended.

If a profile gets suspended

  1. Correct the policy issue before appealing.
  2. Prepare matching registration, license, tax, or utility evidence when available.
  3. Submit the appeal through Google’s process.
  4. Do not create a replacement profile while that appeal is under review.

DMG’s Google Business Profile suspension and reinstatement guide covers the recovery process in more detail.

Before You Launch

Second-Location Checklist for Contractors

Use this as the final pre-launch check after the operating structure has been decided.

  • The branch is a real operating location.
  • Separate staff support the second location.
  • The branch has its own service territory.
  • Address visibility matches how customers use the location.
  • Public hours match actual customer access when hours apply.
  • The phone or linked website represents the branch accurately.
  • The business can produce operating evidence if Google requests verification.

If several items are still future plans, keep the existing profile. Build the second operation first, then create the profile that represents it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Other Google Business Profile Questions for Contractors

Can I use a home address for a service-area business?

A genuine home-based service business can use its operating address for verification. Hide the address when customers do not receive service there.

Can two locations use the same company name?

Yes, when that is the company’s real-world business name at both locations. The profile name should match how the business actually represents itself.

Can a warehouse or dispatch office qualify?

It can support a service-area location when it is a genuine operating base with separate staff and territory. Hide the address when customers are not served there.
